Urine toxic and essential elements analysis is an invaluable tool for the assessment of retention of toxic metals in the body and the status of essential nutrient elements. Toxic metals do not have any useful physiological function, adversely affect virtually every organ system and disrupt the homeostasis of nutrient elements.

Analysis of the levels of toxic metals in urine after the administration of a metal detoxification agent is an objective way to evaluate the accumulation of toxic metals. Acute metal poisoning is rare. More common, however, is a chronic, low-level exposure to toxic metals that can result in significant retention in the body that can be associated with a vast array of adverse health effects and not chronic disease. Once cannot draw valid conclusions about adverse health effects of metals without assessing net retention. For an individual, toxicity occurs when net retention exceeds physiological tolerance.   Net retention is determined by the difference between the rates of assimilation and excretion of metals. To evaluate net retention, one compares the levels of metals in urine before and after the administration of a pharmaceutical metal detoxification agent such as EDTA, DMSA or DMPS. Different compounds have different affinities for specific metals, but all function by sequestering “hidden” metals from deep tissue stores and mobilizing the metals to the kidneys for excretion in the urine. Guidelines for collection periods after administration of the most commonly utilized agents are provided in the table below:

Common Agents

Half Life

Collection Period

6 – 24 hrs

DMPS (IV)

2 – 6 hrs

DMPS (oral)

DMSA

It is important to perform both pre-and post-provocation urinalysis to permit distinction between ongoing exposures to metals (pre-) and net bodily retention. The pre-provocation urine collection can also be utilized to assess the rate of creatinine clearance if a serum specimen is also submitted.

Many clinicians also request the analysis of essential elements in urine specimens to evaluate nutritional status and the efficacy of mineral supplementation during metal detoxification therapy. Metal detoxification agents can significantly increase the excretion of specific nutrient elements such as zinc, copper, manganese, and molybdenum.

Chromium metabolism authorities suggest that 24-hour chromium excretion likely provides the best assessment of chromium status. Early indication of renal dysfunction can be gleaned from urinary wasting of essential elements such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium in an unprovoked specimen.

Variability in urine volume can drastically affect the concentration of elements.   To compensate for urine dilution variation, elements are expressed per unit creatinine for timed collections. For 24-hour collections, elements are reported as both unites per 24 hours and units per creatinine.

Mercury Safe Dentistry

mercury safe denstisry

The AmericanDentalAssociation actually supports Mercury-Safe Dentistry, it just uses a different name. The ADA calls it The ADA’s ‘Dental Mercury Hygiene Recommendations’. The ADA lists a number of sources of mercury exposure at the dental office, including polishing and removing amalgam. It also recommends that all personnel involved in the handling of mercury and dental amalgam be trained in the potential hazards of mercury vapor and the necessity of observing good mercury hygiene. Although limited in scope the ADA does promote mercury safe dentistry. So while it still may vehemently defend the use of amalgam it encourages dentists to be mercury-safe. Not only does the ADA encourage dentists to be mercury-safe, you should promote the fact that you are to your patients and the public. It also shows that the ADA does not believe that the elemental mercury used in amalgams is somehow safer than elemental mercury used in other products and equipment.

The ADA’s Dental Mercury Hygiene Recommendations were published in: J AM Dent Assoc, Vol 134, No.11, 1498-1499; © 2003, American Dental Association. You can access the article online at http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/134/11/1498.

Holistic dentistry

 Holistic Treatment

There is a lot of confusion of exactly what is holistic dentistry. Holistic dentistry simply takes a truly comprehensive approach to your oral healthcare. Holistic dentists believe that the entire body works together to create health, so your oral health impacts and is impacted by the health of the rest of your body. We’ll consider possible problems, such as diabetes, that could be contributing directly to oral health issues like gum disease.

Advanced Dentistry is a renowned name in the field of holistic dentistry. We offer holistic treatment to all our patients with the aid of our highly experienced and trained holistic dentist, Dr. Theodora Skoura. As a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and Mercury Free European Project Dr Skoura follows the principal the organization was built on- to be an advocate for safer dentistry. The organization is the leader in science –based biological dentistry. Biological Dentistry is not a separate specialty of dentistry, but a thought process, an attitude that can apply to all facets of dental practice, and to health care in general: to always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the goals of modern dentistry, of contemporary healthcare.

At your first visit, we will give you a thorough dental examination. He will conduct a full-mouth intraoral camera survey so that we are able to understand your total situation. Our approach being complete, we call ourselves holistic dentists and our dentistry holistic-dentistry. Also botanology and herbal treatment receipes are prepared by Dr. Skoura and her team as tailor made treatments are used for each patient for oral hygiene aid medicaments such as mouthwashes and gels.

PREVENTION CARE

7872763_m

Regular examinations, or check-ups, are a must and form the basis of our preventative dental care plan.

Even with the perfect oral hygiene routine you can still develop dental problems that you may not be able to spot by yourself in your own bathroom mirror.

We use special intra oral magnifying cameras so that we can visualise all angles of your teeth and gums on a large screen.

We will give you a thorough oral examination, with oral cancer screening as standard. We strongly believe in the motto – prevention is better than cure and recommend an examination at least every 6 months and ideally 3 months to ensure problems that are caught early on and treated when they need a “little fix,” instead of waiting until it hurts and a more drastic and costly solution is required.

In addition to an ultrasonic scale and polish we also offer the latest prophyflex power clean system which fires a jet of compressed air, water and fine sodium bicarbonate particles at your teeth to polish the surface and remove debris.

It cleans your teeth thoroughly removing any superficial stains giving you an instantly whiter smile without bleaching.

PERIODONTICS/ PERIODONTOLOGY

1280x720

Periodontal disease should be treated in the least invasive and most cost effective way possible.

Patients who are noted to have periodontal disease will be recommended for a deep cleaning  with special minimal invasive endoscopic instruments along with the use of Periochip.
Periochip is an antibiotic placed below the gum line and into the pocket to help facilitate healing.
In most periodontal disease cases this is enough but we do offer further periodontal procedures if necessary to combat periodontal disease.
This includes Endogain (a bone and tissue growth factor), dental bone grafting, pocket reduction surgery, and crown lengthening procedures.
We are also proud to offer special mouthwashes (oral rinse for bacterial control) which helps minimise microbial buildup between appointments.

DENTAL CONTOURING/BONDING

dentist

Oral Surgery or extraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth.
Extractions are performed for many reasons, including tooth decay that has caused destruction of enough of
the tooth to make the tooth unable to be restored.
Wisdom Teeth extractions are routinely performed if they are impacted or infected.
We take pride in performing extractions with the minimal complications as the use of modern techniques allow
for quick recovery and avoidance of occurrence of any bleeding, swelling or discomfort.
Our approach is for conservative dentistry and we do not opt for extraction but as a last resort.

During sports trauma can occur in the jaws and teeth even dislocation of your jaw joint.

Prevention can be done with the use of tailor made fitting mouthguards.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS AND RETREATMENT

cosmetic-dentistry-bellevue1

Endodontic Treatment is needed when decay has progressed into the nerve of the tooth.
Root Canal Treatment involves removal of the nerve from the center of a tooth and the dentist then proceeds to seal the roots closed.
This can prevent the onset of a painful infection in the nerve that may spread into the bone and surrounding tissue.
Root Canal Treatment can also treat an infection that has developed into a dental abscess.

BRIDGES

11622521_m

If you wish to replace a missing tooth or more, a satisfactory options for replacement, commonly used, is the bridge.
A bridge is an appliance made of porcelain design to replace missing teeth in the most natural way possible.
This procedure usually takes from two to three appointments to complete and is very similar to having a crown placed.
First Appointment
The first visit begins by giving you a local anaesthetic. We prepare your teeth in a very specific way in order to maximise the retention and esthetics of your new bridge.
After the teeth are fully prepared, we proceed with the impression stage.
Once the impression stage is completed, we will place a temporary (transitional) bridge on your teeth.
These plastic (acrylic) restorations are placed on teeth to protect them and the gum tissues between dental visits until the lab constructs the permanent crown.
The temporary cementing used is designed to allow the easy removal of the temporary crown at your next scheduled visit.

Second Appointment
At that time, the temporary bridge is removed and any temporary cement is cleaned from the prepared teeth.
Dr. Skoura will fit the final bridge, check for accuracy, adjust for any bite discrepancies and evaluate the aesthetics.
If all of these factors are acceptable, the bridge is cemented to your teeth.
It is not unusual for the new bridge to be mildly sensitive to cold temperatures for a few weeks.
Further adjustments to the bridge may be necessary.
If the bridge is well constructed, then it should appear entirely natural, and restore function to the area.

WHITENING

OCCLUSAL PROBLEMS

shutterstock_78629152

Teeth adjacent to the gap (where the tooth was lost) begin to shift (move) towards the gap and cause functional bite problems.

Missing teeth can result in bone loss and shrinkage of your jawbone over time.

Missing teeth can cause your facial muscles to sag (due to lack of support) and make you look much older than you are.

Often many of headache complaints arise from malocclusion of your bite which puts unwanted stress on surrounding muscles.

AESTHETIC FILLINGS

106513192

The Makeup of a Tooth
The external part of the tooth is called the enamel, which is arguably the hardest natural material produced by animals. It consists of very closely knit calcium crystals and contains no living tissue. Dental porcelains easily and efficiently imitate the enamel part of a tooth.
The inner part of a tooth is the dentin, which is more porous and similar to bone. It consists of microscopic tubes of collagen with calcium crystal deposits. Dentin is a live tissue and a very sensitive one. Feeling in the dentin is transmitted through the pulp, or nerve tissues, in the very center of the tooth. To mimic the natural dentin in the teeth, today’s dental composite resins are common in non-amalgam fillings. These composites are made of a plastic resin and silica filler.

Tooth loss is something that affects millions of people every year, luckily in modern day dentistry there are two main types of dentures
that are used to replace missing teeth.
There are full dentures, which replace a full set of either upper or lower teeth, and partial dentures which only replace a few missing teeth.
Loose dentures can irritate your gums, cause problems with eating and social embarrassment, we ensure that our dentures are always made to fit securely in place.
If you require partial dentures then we also offer the latest flexible Valplast cosmetic dentures.
These partial dentures tend to be more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing as there are no visible metal clasps.
Suffering from loose dentures?
Many people suffer from loose dentures and eating solid foods can often be a problem, affecting the quality of your life.

IMPLANTS

implants

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. In fact, the development and use of implants is one of the biggest advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. Dental implants are made up of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. They are posts that are surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth.

Implants are a safe, well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. It’s probably true to say that implants, much like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them. How well you look after your implants – and whether you go for your regular maintenance appointments – will have the biggest impact on how long they will last.If you don’t look after your implants they will develop a coating similar to that found on neglected natural teeth. Left untreated, this can lead to gum infection, bleeding, soreness and general discomfort. You could get all these problems with natural teeth. If your implants are well looked after, and if the bone they are fitted to is strong and healthy, you can expect them to last for many years. However, just as with other surgical implants (such as a hip replacement) there is no lifetime guarantee.

Placing an implant is often easier than taking a tooth out and is usually done using a simple local anaesthetic. You will not feel any pain at the time, but just like after an extraction, you may feel some discomfort during the week after the surgery.Sometimes your dentist might give you a sedative if you are very nervous or if the case is a complicated one. General anaesthetics are rarely used for implants and are generally only used for very complicated cases.

Usually the permanent false teeth are fitted 3 to 4 months after the implants are put in. Some teeth can now even be fitted at the same time as the implants (these are called ‘immediate implants’) but you should check with your dentist to see whether these are suitable for you. Sometimes treatment takes longer and your dentist will be able to talk to you about your treatment time.

If you are interested in dental implants, it’s a good idea to discuss it carefully with your dentist first. If you are in good general health this treatment may be an option for you. In fact, your health is more of a factor than your age. You may be medically evaluated by a physician before any implant surgery is scheduled.

Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or leukemia, may interfere with healing after surgery. Patients with these issues may not be good candidates for implants. Using tobacco can also slow healing.
